So I decided to wait a little while before considering a subscription to Apple TV+. This is because it had a lacklustre launch and most of its content (at least for a while) didn't really interest me much. I guess if you were to compare it to other streaming services, it's definitely got original content with big names for sure. But unlike the others, accessing the app is limited to the Apple ecosystem of devices and some select non-Apple devices such as PlayStation 5, Xbox One/Series S/X and some smart TVs. So accessibility is limited at this time. But eventually I finally decided to give it a go, and honestly it's good for now, but could be better. So let's take a look at the first film I watched on the service (outside the small digital library I have with Apple) that features a few Marvel faces:
The film which is largely set at various points in the 21st Century, is about a man called Cherry (played by Mr. Spoils-A-Lot and also the current Spider-Man at the time of typing this, Tom Holland) who one day falls in love with his college classmate Emily (played by Ciara Bravo) and their relationship soon blossoms. But when she decides to leave and study in Montreal, Cherry is left heartbroken and devastated. So he joins the army to escape his problems, but when he arrives home to Emily, he begins to have PTSD and starts doing drugs to ease his condition. To make matters worse for the pair, he resorts to robbing banks to ensure he has enough money for the drugs which can only make things bad as time goes on.
These sorts of films can be difficult to watch. But at least it proves to me that Tom Holland can play serious roles if you can ignore his problem with spoiling everything outside of filming. Also as the first film for the Russo Brothers outside of Marvel, it's OK at best. Like I said, it's a difficult watch and Tom's narration certainly helps make sense of it all, and it is pretty stylish too. But it ain't going to win many awards at least in story work despite being based on the life of a real drug addicted army veteran. Give it a watch if you want, but just be ready for some pretty but understandably uncomfortable acting. 6/10
