Not normally into romantic comedies. Most are quite cheesy and cringy, and I often wonder why some of them exist. Don't get me wrong though, there are some out there that are hilarious such as Love Actually and Bridesmaids. But for a long time, something was missing in that genre. The thing being a film that represents those of the LGBTQ+ community. So in other words, those that may be attracted to the same gender or both genders, those that identify as something other than the gender they were born as and many more. In a world where pronouns to identify what we want to be is now more useful than ever before, films like this one don't often come around much. So let's take a look:
The titular character Simon (played by Nick Robinson who I last saw in Jurassic World) is a high school boy living in Atlanta, Georgia who has a loving family and a good circle of friends. Unbeknownst to many of his closest people, Simon considers himself to be gay yet hasn't come out of the closet yet. He then becomes aware of a guy known only as "Blue" who has done an online confession about his own sexuality and the pair begin exchanging messages. This then leads to a series of events where Simon is forced into awkward situations, nearly loses the people closest to him all while seeking out Blue.
Unlike other risky films like Music where its depiction of something is completely inaccurate and insulting, Love, Simon does a good job of its depiction of a guy who is gay. Plus its actually has some quirkiness and good fun bits about it that most other romcoms don't have. Honestly I was going into this expecting it to not be very good, but happy that it was better than I thought, and it's clearly a win for diversity and done right this time. 9/10
