Ahead of this blog's 10th anniversary, I decided it was finally time to talk about what I think are the worst films I have ever seen. For too long have I talked about the best of the best and now after people have been asking, we're going to look at the worst of the worst. Now not all the films on this list are completely bad. But to qualify for the list, I must have seen them and have felt angry, disappointed, bored, disgusted or even confused at the end of it. All personal preference as always and I'm not counting any bad film that falls under the "so bad its good" category because that kind of speaks for itself. Also even though I did a top 100 of my personal favourite films, I figured I could do 25 on this occasion. So let's take a look at these films that I am unlikely to do a full review of (unless I have reviewed them already):
25 - Justice League (2017)
As most of these films are films I have seen and/or reviewed before, I'm going to use the list as an excuse to give you guys my more recent opinion of them. Of course I was going to put Justice League in this list. It's the result of two conflicting visions. One of Zack Snyder and the other of Joss Whedon. Two very different directors with one liking stylish scenes with spectacular visual effects and the other liking dialogue, one liners and the occasional action sequence. But if the Snyder Cut has taught us anything, it's that a studio should never have to interfere in any of their big blockbuster films. It just ruins the film and what we get is a bad film and this film while having some redeemable qualities, was not what we were promised in the trailers. The Snyder Cut was what was promised and is arguably the much better version. Even the studio executives after seeing this film felt that they should have left Zack to carry on with it after mourning his daughter. Joss Whedon is a good filmmaker, but not the right director for this kind of film.
24 - Mars Needs Moms
Ever since motion captured full CGI films became a thing, I was always worried about them. Not all of them are bad, but they can look quite ugly and unintentionally scary. Mars Needs Moms is a very bad film. Nothing about it is funny and to see Seth Green's face on a little boy's body with a little body doing the voice, just seems a bit off to me. Then there are the aliens that look creepy and just the whole premise makes me wonder what was going through the heads of the film makers. Granted it was based on a book, but perhaps should've stayed as such or have this be just live action or animated. Not a combination of the two. Has some redeemable qualites such as the boy and the mom do make up in the end and the comic relief character is quite expressive and decent. Just everything else didn't work for me.
23 - Ice Age: Continental Drift
Blue Sky were until they closed earlier this year, a pretty good animation studio. They made lots of great films, but they always seem to come back to Ice Age often because they have new ideas for it. Now the first three films were great (even if the third one didn't make much sense) and had a reason for existing besides being a cash grab. This fourth entry however, is very much a cash grab. It didn't need to exist as the previous film kind of ended the story on a good satisfactory note. It also felt like a rehash of one of the earlier films and it features quite a few voices that are not acting voices, but voices of rappers and singers that really have no business being in a film like this. Scrat is still funny as always, but even he isn't enough to save the film this time around. If you want to do pirates, you should have just made a film about pirates. Don't just use one of your own franchises to do that. Pixar did that with Cars 2 which was their excuse to do a spy film and we all know how that played out for them.
22 - Alvin and the Chipmunks (the first three)
I get it. Hollywood loves nostalgia and wants to make money of it. But the chipmunk films are not all that great. I have only ever seen the first three and I can definitley say that they are all pretty bad. The film posters keep recycling the same face of the chipmunks for a start. Although they are supposed to sound squeaky, the voices are annoying. The pop culture references are not that great. The forced toilet humor isn't neccessary. Just a lot of things really wind me up about these films. Unfunny and not that impressive. Maybe if it was animated like the cartoon, it would fare better. But as it is, best to avoid all the films if you can. Though I do find it quite amusing that the fourth film was released the same week that a Star Wars film was released and you can tell which one did better from reading that.
21 - Godzilla (1998)
This Godzilla film was the first attempt by an American studio and crew at creating a film about the iconic giant monster, and boy was it bad. To start with, Godzilla is not a dinosaur. To my knowledge, he doesn't lay eggs and in most of his appearances (even the more recent films), he is depicted as a misunderstood hero. The damage done to the city is not by this creature that fans now refer to as just Zilla, but by the military because apparently these trained officers cannot hit a giant monster. The acting is bad, it has that ending that makes out it will have a sequel but ultimately it didn't (at least not as a film) and Zilla isn't even all that big even though the posters make out as such. Avoid this film and watch the films made by Toho and Legendary/Warner Bros.
20 - Some of the most recent Universal Monsters films
The Universal Monsters films haven't been quite the same since the original black and white era. Universal have constantly tried to make further films, but most of them end up being pretty bad and go nowhere. The Mummy films (the ones starring Brendan Fraser) are also not great, but are decent in a way. But this film shown above was really only bad because it spent too long establishing a cinematic universe that ultimately never happened. If Universal are really struggling to keep them relevant, maybe they should focus their efforts on theme parks or television. But as for the films, watch the very original ones and avoid most of the new/recent ones.
19 - 10,000 BC
Lots of films based on historical events are always never going to be completely accurate. Most try, but a majority are a little inconsistent. 10,000 BC on the other hand, seems to want to spend more time with visual thrills than keep anything accurate historically. It doesn't work. Visuals may be impressive, but its not the only thing that matters in making films. Very forgettable and a missed opportunity for something better.
18 - Most of the direct to home media animated Disney sequels/prequels
It's hard to imagine a time when Disney were desperate to the point where they commissioned these sequel/prequel films. It is very clear that all of these no matter the quality, are all cash grabs at the end of the day. Most of them were never destined to be superior to the original film and the animation is clearly the work of a reduced budget. Even though Disney are in a better place these days, none of us would want them to forget these films. Sure the music is good and some of them are not as bad as they make out. But if you want a good Disney film, watch the original films and stay well away from these films.
17 - Speed 2
The first Speed film made sense. It was about a bus that had to go at a certain speed due to a bomb being underneath it. It was quite simply a great example of an adrenaline action thriller, but this sequel is far from that. Boats can go fast sure, but the boat in this film felt like it was going too slow and by the time it reached the shore, it was made out that it was going too fast and ended up leaving the ocean completely. Really stupid, over the top and just another film that didn't need to be made. Also Sandra Bullock is a great actress, but a pretty bad one here.
16 - Chicken Little
I felt that it was ballsy of Disney to attempt to make a CGI film without any help from Pixar. It showed that they were ready to do it on their own without the help of the one animation studio that at the time, had done better than Disney's own animated films. Whatever people think of Chicken Little whether it was bad or not, one thing is made very clear; Disney were not ready for the responsibility of doing their own CGI animated film. It is a bad film that has no right of being part of the Disney animation canon because of the hate in the film, and it's just not very good. Though most of us have forgiven Disney as this did come out during what is considered a pretty dark time for the company and this film shows it whether it be intentional or not.
15 - Shark Tale
When this film came out originally, I quite liked it. I enjoyed the music, the acting and some other things too. But looking at it now, I realise that it's not as good as I thought it once was. Now granted the acting done by the shark mafia is pretty good, especially as the actors themselves are associated with gangster films. The soundtrack is also great as it demonstrates the works of some of the best known talented rappers and singers out there. But the rest of the film is pretty bad. Drawing heavily on racial stereotypes, fish related puns and like Chicken Little for Disney, this was DreamWorks doing the film themselves without help from PDI. Of course the quality of their films would get ridiculously better over time, but this film was not great despite its reletive number of redeemable qualities. Even the video game was terrible.
14 - X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Ever since the day Logan came out, I have always seen that film as the one that really ends the X-Men film series. Every film before it had Hugh Jackman in it as many would see him as the driving force of the seires so it only made sense that his last film for the series would also end the series. But it didn't as the people wanted to make another Dark Phoenix film having butchered it up the first time around. This attempt was also pretty bad. The timeline is messed up even more, we are expected to believe that this is set in the 90s like the previous films which have been set decades apart and yet the characters haven't aged a day. Are we expected to believe that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender age into Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in a matter of eight years? Because if so, that just doesn't make any sense. Dark Phoenix is a complicated story anyway and clearly this film couldn't do anything right about it. Perhaps the worst of the X-Men films (or at least the ones I have seen) and a film that after such a film like Logan, should have not been made or instead let Marvel make it which they can do now.
13 - Transformers (the Michael Bay films, excluding the first)
While Michael Bay is a bad film maker, he has a few good films out there. But what many consider to be his worst achievement was making the Transformers films. Lots of people enjoy this franchise espeically the animated stuff. But most of these live action films are just not very good. Too much CGI, too much saturation, too long in length when it doesn't need to be and later on down the line, they are all over the place. Most of us can't tell which decepticon is which because of how bland looking they all look. The first one at least to me, felt like the best one of the series and next to that would be the reboot film Bumblebee which wasn't made by Michael Bay and felt more like a Transformers film than his own films. But we have to remember in the end that he only makes films for teenage boys and that he believed that people will still see his films regardless of the quality. Not me though.
12 - The Matrix: Revolutions
I know I have praised the first two Matrix films alongside the anthology series and I am looking forward to this new one coming out. But Revolutions was the worst one for me. While it had lots of ideas that could really work, the execution of the ideas was not great. Neo barely had much screen time in this film and the talking is unbearable to the point where some of us just need to have a break to trully understand what is going on. It's too anti-climatic with dialogue that didn't need to be as long as it was (something of which is shared with Reloaded) and it just didn't work for me. Hopefully this new film will be better, but who knows.
11 - The Human Centipede: Full Sequence
There is no horror franchise out there that can match what is seen here. I mean the idea of making a human centipede just sounds horrible and to think that people would willingly take on another persons' waste just sounds disgusting. It should have never been made, never had sequels and never come into existance in the first place. Perhaps the most disgusting and revolting horror I have ever seen and that's all it will ever be.
10 - Superman IV: Quest for Peace
As I was making this list, I had wondered if I should have any one of the DC films that are among the worst ever made. Batman and Robin is a bad film, but it still gets referenced even today and has quite a few redeemable qualities despite how bad it is. Besides there is one Batman related film far worse than that one. Green Lantern is also a bad film that is also referenced even today and even that has some redeemable qualities such as a few funny moments, nods to the comics and some decent acting (plus it gave Ryan Reynolds a means to do Deadpool again and do it much better the second time around). And some of the DCEU films that didn't work out originally, were given a more welcoming reception for the extended/different cuts. But for this Superman film, its not good at all. Films that have small budgets can work if done right, but this film had poor effects, recycled too many elements and made out that some things in space are possible when its not and the villain who clearly needs the sun to move, moves just find out of the sunlight. This film killed the Christopher Reeve saga as no film with him as Superman was made since. It's just a bad film and the concept of finding world peace is always a bad idea. Also false advertising too as Superman never grabbed a nuclear warhead at all in the film (at least on screen anyway).
9 - Die Another Day
So originally I wanted to put Song of the South here because it is a very controversial film and I felt I would be hating that film a lot. But couldn't find a means to watch it so instead I give you what I feel is the worst Bond movie. Now I enjoy the Bond films like most would. I admit that none of them are perfect, but with Die Another Day, it is far from perfect. Too much CGI, the realism that the franchise has been known for is non-existant here and Halle Berry may be a decent actress, but she is far from being a Bond girl. But the biggest problem for me is the villain. How am I supposed to understand that a guy who is North Korean at first, then becomes this British dude all of a sudden with a confusing explaination to boot. Its perhaps the worst of the Bond films and also the worst one for Pierce Brosnan. So bad that this ended up being his final film in the role. What a waste considering that this was the film that would mark the franchise's 40th anniversary.
8 - The Last Airbender
It's a bad film for those who haven't seen the cartoon, but a hated film for those who have like me. M. Night Shyamalan is a film maker who makes these films that are bad, but somehow become unintenionally funny despite how serious they are supposed to be. Not all his films are bad, but as a director, he isn't all that great. He claims to be a fan of the show and yet this film doesn't really feel like a film about Aang the last airbender. It lacks the charm of the show, the humor and it's just very dull with racism thrown in across the fire nation actors. Also last I checked, it took one Earth bender to lift a tank. Not six or seven to lift a tiny little rock. Such an embarrssment I'm sure for Nickelodeon and I hope the Netflix adaptation does better (but that really isn't saying much).
7 - Emoji Movie
I could probably sum up the Emoji Movie with emojis like I did with my review. Because it really is a pile of 💩. When you cast James Corden (who is known to be annoying some of the time) in a film and Patrick Stewart (who is otherwise a fantastic actor) as a literal sentient pile of 💩, you know the film is doomed to fail. It's Sony's attempt at doing a film like Wreck-It Ralph and The Lego Movie, but not hitting those good notes that made those two films great. Stick to your own emojis and skip this film if you can. 💩😡😠😱😲
6 - Son of the Mask
Perhaps there is a reason why Jim Carrey usually doesn't do sequels. It's like a curse where you get him in the first film and it does really well, but he doesn't return for the second and that film ends up being pretty bad. Son of the Mask is no exception here and the sad thing about it is that a competition was being done for fans to appear in the sequel. Little did they know that this film would come out a long time after the competition so many will have likely forgot about it all. Too many uneccessary wide angle lense shots, unintentional scary moments and a pretty pi** poor attempt at the story or any kind of fun that the original did well on. Yeah enjoy the first film, but stay away from this scary film.
5 - Catwoman
You know, there's probably a reason why DC never did any more Batman associated films after this one unlike Joker. I mean this should be a heist sort of film because that's what Catwoman is. A typical cat burguler who wants jewels. It's really a no brainer and it did not need all these changes. This film is a complete betrayal for Batman fans who were wanting Selina Kyle, not this "Precious" character. It has little to do with the beloved DC character, the outfit looks too revealing for what is meant to be a cat burguler and Halle Berry as mentioned already, is a decent actress. But she's better as Storm than Catwoman. Enjoy Anne Hathaway, Michelle Pfeiffer and Eitha Kitt's take on the charatcer. But avoid this one and throw it in the cat litter.
4 - Jack & Jill and most of the Happy Madison films
I've never really been a fan of Adam Sandler as an actor. I feel he just doesn't quite understand that every other comedy actor and comedian have adapted to the times and he thinks the same old thing is going to always work. Except it doesn't. Now not all his films are terrible. I felt The Wedding Singer was a good film and although the writing in Pixels felt lazy, that film was decent too. I really enjoy all the Hotel Transylvania films too as they feel like the cartoons that we used to love back in the 90s. I just feel that if something doesn't work the first time around, leave it and move on. But Mr. Sandler felt he should make his own production company and make tons of films. Most of them are bad films, perhaps some of the worst films ever made. Very few of them are actually good or decent. But Jack and Jill is definitley up there as being one of his worst films amongst many of his other Happy Madison films. If you like the comedy that is considered the lowest form, then you may find some enjoyment with these films. But if you want something a bit better, check out other comedians and comedy films and leave Happy Madison in the trash bin.
3 - The Garbage Pail Kids Movie
Well at least one film on this list admits that it's garbage by having the word in the name. Whenever a film is made that's based on something that never really had a story in the first place such as the previously mentioned Emoji Movie, the chances of it being a hit are unlikely. Possible, but unlikley if the crew behind it have a bad reputation among other issues. This film like Chicken Little is too mean spritied, it feels like the main characters are more sidekicks than anything else and the actual kids are not very pleasant to look at or engaging. It also uses typical 80s stereotype characters and character development is not well executed. This is just a film that should have never been made. Collect the cards, but don't bother collecting the film. Save your money.
2 - The Twilight Saga
It's strange to think that during the years when the Harry Potter films were being released, so many other studios and companies wanted to cash in on the success of the films. Disney and Fox (before the acqusition) made films based on the Narnia books, but ended up making only three films. They also tried making Percy Jackson films, but ended up making just two films. Both companies would continue to try to capitalise on the success, but never really get anywhere. Meanwhile over at Summit Entertainment, they went ahead and made films based on the Twilight books which for a long time was Harry Potter's main competitor. But most will agree these days that Potter is the more superior as you actually learn a lot from the characters and they were all great stories about growing up and knowing that some things can't go the way you want them to go. Twilight on the other hand, was just a series of stories about making a boyfriend. The films are as bland as the books and I have to wonder why Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart decided to act and put up with this s**t. Those three are fantastic actors, but the films made them out to be pretty bad. Pattinson being a bored emo vampire is not all that great. Taylor Lautner having to strip down often in the film, may be a crowd pleaser to some, but it must get a bit chilly at times. And Kristen Stewart comes across as a no nonsense actress and yet she's taking in all that is bad about the films. Vampires and werewolves are a lot cooler than you realise and even the Hotel Transylvania films make that very clear. They are not as boring as these films make out. Also plenty of times in the films there are creepy moments and moments where I just want to vomit. Watch some other werewolf or vampire thing and avoid this cr** where possible.
So usually for most of these lists, I do honourable (or in this case dishonourable) mentions. But I really think that there is no other film I can think of that is worth going on the list. Some of the worst films I have seen are actually good because of how bad they are. But there is one film that I hate more than any of these films and that film is...
1 - Music
My number one film was always going to be something that tries to represent something to the best of its ability, but somehow ends up doing the opposite. Music is about a high functioning autistic person navigating life at a time where changes are beginning to happen. I have met a lot of high funtioning autistic people and I myself am autistic also. This film completely misrepresents those on the spectrum. Too much exaggeration on the matter that makes everything about Music to not really represent the entire autism population (not to mention that Maddie Ziegler is not autistic herself and was probably cast because she frequently collaborates with Sia anyway). It also attracts racism issues as it follows the plot device of having the black guy as that guy who comes at the heroes hour of need. Musical numbers come in out of nowhere (and also brightly coloured which isn't great for those on the spectrum) and just so many other things that make this film the absolute worst film I have ever seen. Some of the acting is ok as is a few of the musical numbers (plus having the dog at the end after this painful sit through was worth it). But this is the worst film I have seen and has sealed Sia's fate as being a bad director who can't take critism, claims that people with autism are bad actors and just has issues with those with disabilites in general. Avoid this film and watch something that is actually autism friendly.
Wow that was really something to get through. So what are the worst films you have ever seen? Maybe its all the films on this list or perhaps more. Well either way, feel free to comment below and as a friend once told me "if you value your sanity, avoid watching these films". Or watch them knowing that you have been warned.
