It's been a long time since I last explored LittleBigPlanet. Having played nearly all the games, its definitley up there as being among the great IPs that Sony themselves publish. It's unique in its ability to be like a platformer, with the world looking like something that's been knitted together with various materials. It's also got some British influence, with previous games being narrated by Stephen Fry and the games themselves being largely developed by British game developers. I feel with this game, its trying very hard to mimic Super Mario 3D World and does a pretty good job of that while also trying very hard not to be a complete copy cat so to speak. This game was also a launch title for the PS5 and yeah it does well to show off what the console can do. Sure, it's not as big or as mighty as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but it gives people that LittleBigPlanet adventure that hasn't happened in what feels like forever. So let's see what adventures await us and Sackboy in this game:
In a little place called Craftworld, its inhabitants are enjoying life. That is until the evil Vex (voiced by Richard E. Grant who I seem to be seeing a lot of on screen recently) arrives and sucks everything up with his machines to have the people be his slaves as he works to take over Craftworld with his evil Uproar. Sackboy manages to escape his clutches and together with assistance from the elder sackperson Scarlet (voiced by the Vicar of Dibley herself, Dawn French), he goes on a journey to defeat Vex and prevent his plans from coming to fruition. So like I said, this is more of a 3D platformer than 2.5D like previous games. In a way this is good because it's important to keep the genre alive and use other IPs besides Super Mario to do just that. Like previous games, each level has a lot of collectibles to find including stickers, orbs and bells. Each level will have things that Sackboy can attach himself to, to be able to solve puzzles, complete each level and get one step closer to the end goal. The DualSense controller has much of its features be used over the course of the game, such as tilting when on a slide and various other points too.
This game overall is another good entry in the LittleBigPlanet series, even though it is missing the creation feature that was a big deal in earlier games, but still pays nods to it through collectibles and the ability to change what Sackboy wears. It's good for local and online multiplayer and will perhaps be the closest Sony will get to having a Super Mario like game for the PlayStation line of consoles. As a launch title, it does well to show off what the PS5 can do with it running at 60FPS and the presentation of the game looking very much as next-gen as you can get. It may be marketed as a spin-off, but to me, it feels like a main entry just because of how much it feels like previous games, even though it's fully 3D this time around. 9/10
