Random Movie Review - Wonder Woman 1984

The first Wonder Woman film many could say was that one film that changed the superhero genre in a way that proved once and for all that a female led superhero film can be done right when given to the right people. In this case, those people were Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins who both return for this sequel. Now like many of the films due for release last year, this film was also affected by the pandemic, but managed to get a release at a time when a film like this was needed most. Despite the mixed reception and the great devide among fans, film goers and critics, most people agree that this film is a feel good film that was very much needed during what is arguably considered a pretty terrible year. I'm not really sure what to make of it either, but let's take a look anyway:

The film begins with a young Diana (reprised by Lilly Aspell from the first film) taking part in an athletics event on Themyscira in which she uses shortcuts and cheats. Learning of this, Antiope (reprised by Robin Wright) removes her from the competition, but not without telling her that anything she does in life that's worthwhile, must be done honestly. Then we cut to the titular year of 1984 during the Cold War in which a much older Diana (reprised by Gadot) is working at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC while being Wonder Woman in secret. She along with new employee Barbara Ann Minerva (played by Kristen Wiig) find out about a robbery in this place and notice one item that can grant its holder one wish. The pair unknowingly have their wishes granted, but it isn't long before other beings learn of the item's existence and want to use it for their own purposes and put the world into a chaotic state.

One thing I definitely notice right from the start when compared to the first film is how vibrant and colourful this film is. It also tries its best to have some nostalgia, given the year it's set in. The overall idea of having wishes with consequences is one concept that is an interesting one to look at in a film like this. We all know the whole deal with genies and their three wishes. But very rarely have we seen a story where every wish has a consequence. However, this film, despite its good intentions, is a bit of a mess. Full of a few clichés and a few unfunny jokes. But is it a bad film? No, of course not. I just hoped it would be even better than the first, but I guess even that wish has a consequence to it. 7/10
