I really enjoy Simon Pegg in the works that he does. He's very funny and a great writer who has gone on to create satires, travel the galaxy in two of the biggest sci-fi franchises out there, and he's even worked with the likes of Steven Speilberg. However, sometimes despite the love he receives, there's always going to be one film that people just don't know what to make of it. Now personally I feel this film is lacking with comedy especially as you have not just Pegg, but also Hank Azaria who many of you know as one of the voice actors from The Simpsons. There's also Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey too, who are quite well known comedians. So why do I think this film could be funnier and yet isn't. Well that's what I'm going to answer right now, so let's get to it:
Dennis Doyle (played by Pegg) is about to get married, but gets cold feet and runs away. Five years later, he's come to terms with losing the love of his life, Libby (played by Thandiwe Newton). But in a desperate attempt to prove himself to all his friends and her, he decides to sign up for the London Marathon. Most of the build up is then him trying to train for it and going through all the trails and tribulations such as losing all that weight, taking on a blister and trying to outsmart Libby's new person Whit (played by Azaria).
Even now, I still think it could do with a few more laughs. But for what it is, it has a great cast that are very much funny in everything else they do. The story is fine as well. I guess what I was hoping for is the laughs I got from Pegg in the Cornetto trilogy. But it's OK and it is a good film even if it's lacking in funny stuff. 7/10
