Yep we're going back into real time shows. So after 24 came to an end with Live Another Day, many attempts were made to continue the franchise. Various film ideas were being developed including a feature length film and even a Die Hard crossover too. Neither really happened in the end and other things have been in various stages since the show came to its end. But after a long wait, came this spin-off series in 2017 which continues the style of the show and being about taking on terrorists, but featuring a brand-new set of characters. Looks interesting for sure even though it only lasted one season and like Live Another Day, it only lasted for 12 episodes starting and ending at 12pm with a time jump within the final episode to achieve that. Let's take a look:
Set three years after Live Another Day, ex-Army Ranger Eric Carter (played by Corey Hawkins) returns home after leading a mission to eliminate terrorists. But upon arriving on US soil, he finds himself and his squad mates being hunted down, all because one of them unwittingly stole a flash drive containing a list of US based terror cells and a means to activate them for any future attack. With no other option, Eric turns to CTU to help save his and his squad mates' lives while also preventing further attacks.
Although not a bad spin-off, there are some things that make this series feel too similar to the original. Now I'm all for reinvention of a formula that worked so well the first time round, albeit with some flaws here and there. This show does try hard in that area, but sadly falls too far back to the way it worked before. Despite that, the cast act their socks off and manage to give us great performances in an otherwise OK spin-off that had the missed opportunity of reinvention. Probably just as well that we didn't get another season, but lots of other stuff are happening over the horizon for the franchise, so guess there is that to look forward to. 7/10
