Yes we are finally now talking about a horror thing in October (though having said that, No Time To Die had elements of horror in it so...). In the wake of the main show's final season, it's kind of nice to see that the video game world of The Walking Dead is still going strong, even after the critically acclaimed TellTale series. Granted, not every single game is great (which sadly speaks true for many franchises that didn't start off as games), but the most that I have played have been alright if anything. Now we come to the first virtual reality game, and I got to say, it's interesting. Terrifying, of course, but interesting nonetheless. Let's take a look:
Set in New Orleans, players take the role of a male or female character known only as the Tourist. The game unsurprisingly plays out like most survival horror games, with you taking on the walkers and survive in the midst of a battle between two factions. As this is a VR game, melee attacks are very key to defeating enemies and there are plenty of ways to beat them and use weapons. The game has a timer which once rung, a horde of walkers will then come in to attack the player. At the home base, you can create new weapons and items with the items you find on your journey. Crafting recopies are all around, as are random events where a character will ask you for supplies, with or without hostility. As with many games, there are enemy types, with each walker being a little different.
It may not be much if it were a typical survival horror video game, but this is perhaps the first VR game I have played that shows how a typical game like this, could be portrayed in that angle. Its a great experience worth playing and proof that VR can be taken as a serious platform and not some short lived gimmick. 9/10
