Many of our favourite western made franchises have had the anime treatment with the most well-known being Animatrix (based on The Matrix franchise) and Batman: Gotham Knight (based on all things Batman with some connections to The Dark Knight trilogy). Now the time has come for Star Wars to get the treatment, and it's fair to say that it's been a long time coming. Many fans have wanted a galaxy far, far away to be given this treatment for such a long time, and we finally have it as a Disney+ original anthology series. Let's take a look:
So many of the stories told are original, with the mandate clearly stating that all Japanese animation companies involved don't need to worry about continuity with the canon timeline per se and just make the best possible thing they can. One story is set in an alternative universe, possibly as Disney's answer to fans demands for a Star Wars themed What If series. Another one is set during the Galactic Empire days portrayed between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Another is set before The Phantom Menace and the last two are set after The Rise of Skywalker which explores the remnants of the Imperial Army and what became of the Jedi Knights after all that happened.
It's good to see so many wonderful animation studios come together to create this collection of stories. They all breathe new life into the Star Wars universe with fantastic visuals and animation. It's also nice that each story takes a few risks too, which you don't often see a lot. Fans old and new are in for a good time here. Just don't expect to see any familiar faces (well, except for a few Stormtroopers I guess and a Hutt or two). 9/10
