The American Story franchise has hit leaps and bounds since it first debuted all those years ago. With two anthology shows that have proven how a great horror and crime story can play out across one series, we now have a series that's a little different. It's horror once again, but with a twist. The twist being that every episode is a self-contained story with its own characters and settings. Kind of like Black Mirror in a way, but horror and not scary technological stuff. Let's take a look:
So as I said, every episode is a self-contained story except the first two episodes which make up a two part story on a gay couple and their daughter visiting the Murder House. There's also a story about some Frat pratts who do some naughty things at Christmas and pay the price. Another one to do with a film at drive in, one where a totem causes someone to get pregnant, and even one on video games.
While it is obviously very different to the main show, it's fine. Each story is great and very much horror, even if some are more scary than others. Everyone acts well, and it finds a way to be distinct from the main show, even though the Murder House plays a big part. But don't expect the greatest of consistency with each story. So an OK spin-off to American Horror Story, but one that may get better with later seasons, should we get any. 7/10
