For as long as I can remember, there has been debate whether Die Hard is a Christmas film or not. Personally, anything that is set at Christmas or has anything to do with Christmas, is in every way a Christmas film. Die Hard to me, may be that film that boosted Bruce Willis into stardom. But it is set at Christmas, therefore it is a Christmas film. What does that have to do with this film, you may ask. Well, it's one of the reoccurring questions the characters are asking in the film. That and some Love Actually moments too. Let's take a look:
The film is centred on a Los Angeles based dating column writer called Natalie Bauer (played by Nina Dobrev) who bases her writing on her own experiences of using dating apps to meet people, but any chance of a relationship is doomed. She one day decides to expand her search radius and matches up with a guy called Josh Lin (played by Jimmy O. Yang) who forms a strong bond with her through a number of long phone calls. Determined to bring an end to her bad luck with dating, she travels to Lake Placid, New York to surprise Josh for the holidays. But what she finds is not quite what she was after, leading into a series of events with varying degrees of results (some funny, others not so much).
Compared to yesterday's film, this film is actually OK. A few laughs here and there and some meaningful moments too. But honestly, this kind of feels like a film about Tinder just like how Free Guy feels like a Fortnite film. But with references to both Die Hard and Love Actually, this is pretty decent for a Netflix romantic comedy set around Christmas. 8/10
