Movie Review - Sing 2

It feels like it's been a long time since we last had an Illumination film. This year feels like they are having a big comeback because there will be three films by them being released this year. This one is the first and after that, a Minions sequel and a Super Mario film starring Chris Pratt, Jack Black and Seth Rogen among others. An interesting trio of films to say the least, but I guess when a pandemic hits, of course they would want to release three films in one year to make up for lost money in the past couple of years. More important than ever too given they are now partners with DreamWorks. But here we are with the second of hopefully many non-Despicable Me sequels/prequels, and who doesn't love a singsong? Well some people find that cringy, but let's take a look at what I guess is the sequel to Zootropolis's lost cousin:

One month following the last films, Buster Moon (reprised by Matthew McConaughey) is enjoying theatre life as his own theatre is thriving. Despite this, he fails to impress a talent scout called Suki (voiced by Chelsea Peretti) who makes it clear that he will never make it big in Redshore City. But after some encouragement, Buster assembles the singers who competed in the last film together as they set off to prove her wrong and go to the very city itself. They meet with Jimmy Crystal (voiced by Bobby Cannavale) who let's them make a musical show on the condition that they cast rock legend Clay Calloway (voiced by Bono) and have it ready in three weeks. The gang set about doing just that, despite a few setbacks and challenges that each character faces during the build up to the big show.

Like many of Illumination's films, this one is very colourful and bright, so those of us with sensitive eyes, be aware of that. The music selection and covers that are done are well selected and covered just like with the first film. And all the character arcs in the film are well executed, while the big show is quite something to admire. As a sequel, it does well what most sequels try to do, which is be bigger and better than the first. It's definitely bigger, but not sure if I would call it better than the first. Maybe on par with the first, but that's probably as far as I would dare go. Plus casting a musical may be a risky move if the film wasn't a musical or wasn't full of music, but Bono plays his part really well I must say. 8/10

Movie Review - Inside Out 2

I guess a sequel to the first makes sense here. I mean, for the most part, this franchise is all about the subject of growing up and with ...
