Random Video Game Review - MultiVersus

You know, in the Nintendo 64 days, I guess no one would really think that a series such as Super Smash Brothers would be so successful and yet here we are 23 years later and now everybody is doing what Nintendo did all those years ago. From Nickelodeon to Cartoon Network and even a random crossover game called Brawlhalla, have each had a go at the whole 2.5D platforming fighter gig. But now we get Warner Bros. Discovery having a crack at it. Yep, characters from across the company are coming all together to battle it out. But unlike Space Jam: A New Legacy which was rated U in the UK despite having rapists and child murderers in the film (albeit as background characters), the company has seemingly learned from that mistake as this game is a 12, apparently. Still doesn't explain why there are characters from Game of Thrones and Rick & Morty in this game (as both franchises are rated higher than a 12), but it's fine I guess. Let's take a look:

So much like with Smash Brothers and similar games, MultiVersus has you battle in a side scrolling manner in which you attempt to knock out your opponents with them being sent further away depending on how much damage they take. Primarily, the game is played as a 2-vs-2 format, but also has free-for-all and 1-vs-1 options too. While the roster of characters is small right now and limited to perhaps the most well known from the major company that Warner Bros. Discovery is these days, it is expected to grow over time. For now, you got characters like Batman (reprised by Kevin Conroy as it should be), Shaggy (reprised by Matthew Lillard), The Iron Giant (voiced by Jonathan Lipow), Arya Stark (reprised by Maisie Williams) and of course Bugs Bunny (reprised by Eric Bauza) just to name a few with more to come.

I think it was the right move for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to make this free-to-play. I know a lot of us are not too fond of games that expect you to pay to get the full package, but for this game, it's not so bad. Because you don't necessarily need to pay to get the full game because by just playing it and meeting certain conditions, you can unlock the full game. Sure, some characters you will need to pay to use, but it's all good. As for the game itself, the characters look exactly as we are meant to expect them to look in this kind of game, and it's nice that the game lets us use various skins so characters such as Batman can appear as they did in various forms of media. But for whether it brings anything new to the genre that Smash Brothers created, the answer is quite simply no. Sure there is a diverse range of characters and all that, but apart from that, this is really just Smash Brothers with characters from the multiverse first seen in the last Space Jam film. Or the Warner Bros. Discovery archive if you want to be technical about it. Would like to see a story mode as it's currently lacking one. 7/10
