TV Season Review - Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Season 1)

Some of you may remember that game CD Projekt made a couple of years ago which to this day, was one that was highly anticipated, but upon release, had a lot of bugs and technical problems. This coming from the company that had great success with their Witcher games, and now it seems Cyberpunk has gone the same way that series had. Well sort of as we now have a Netflix anime series based on the 2020 game which itself is set in the wider franchise that originally was a table-top game. I say sort of because in The Witcher's case, that became a live action series starring Henry Cavill, the former Superman and someone I know a lot of female and some male fans will consider handsome. But anyway, let's have a look at this anime series as Netflix continues to bring us more of these offerings from Japan:

Sticking with the English dub, the story takes place in a dystopia overrun by corruption, crime and cybernetic implants. Our focus is on an impulsive but talented street kid named David Martinez (voiced by Zach Aguilar) who one day loses everything he has in a drive-by shooting. In order to survive, he decides to go onto the wrong side of the law and become an edgerunner; a high-tech mercenary of the black market also known as a "cyberpunk".

This anime, for what it is, is a wonderful visual spectacle. Great animation, full of life and colour, and I like how it focuses more on the settings and environment than it does on the characters. It's like it's trying to make us forget how the launch of 2077 panned out, by giving us the story that the game wanted to give us, but just couldn't. Good work Netflix and hopefully this will keep you going for a while longer in the now ever so packed streaming world. 9/10
