On very rare occasions, you will find films that look like they could be quite boring. But as you start watching it, you soon become mesmerized by the music, the characters and other things too. This is one of those kinds of films and got to be honest, never thought that a film about a fictional composer, would actually be a very intriguing ride. It doesn't have a score per se, but it does have moments of calm music and then all out epicness in doing a score. It stars Cate Blanchett, who is an actress I admire for the stuff she has done over the years, so this could be quite the film. Let's go:
The film focuses on the fictional Lydia Tár (played by Blanchett) who is largely known for her musical scores. At an interview for The New Yorker Festival, she promotes several new projects she is working on, and it's clear that she heavily relies on things going her way and all that. One day, she guest teaches a masterclass at the Juilliard School where during teaching the class, she ridicules a student of colour and of the LGBTQ+ community for not taking interest in white cisgender composers, encouraging the students to focus on the music itself rather than the people composing it. As the film goes on, we soon learn that things are happening behind the scenes that may lead to the downfall of Tár and the fame she once held.
It's a shame that this film was only just released internationally not too long ago, because I would've added it to my best of 2022 films list. But despite that, it is a good film. Not for everyone, granted, but one that will get a lot of people mesmerized in the music and the people making it. I've always been interested in how music is scored, and I certainly think this film shows that in a way that keeps some people interested. But it's probably something I personally will not be trying myself because of how complex this film portrays it. I'm sure loads of people get a kick out of doing it, but it is a big deal with a lot of work. Great film though that's worth some attention over the big blockbusters we have at the moment. 8/10
