Random Video Game Review - Gotham Knights

Before we go into this, I need to clarify a few things. This is in no way connected to the Arkham games. Yes Batman (voiced by Michael Antonakos) is "dead" like in the ending of Arkham Knight. Yes, WB Games Montreal did work for the games and yes many of the same characters do appear here. But despite the similarities, this is very much in a separate universe. Its had mixed reviews from people so far and given I am a fan of all things Batman, I felt obliged to give it a go. So let's get to it and save a Gotham without its Dark Knight:

Following the deaths of both Batman and Comissioner James Gordon, Gotham's crime rate and police corruption rises significantly. The remaining members of the Bat Family, step in to continue Batman's ongoing mission and face off against many if his supervillains and secret societies in the process. Eventually rising to become Gotham's new Knights. The game let's you play as Nightwing (voiced by Christopher Sean), Batgirl (voiced by America Young), Red Hood (voiced by Steven Oyoung) and Red Robin (albeit before taking that name, but anyway, voiced by Sloane Morgan Siegel), each with their own unique set of weapons and fighting styles. But otherwise are controlled largely the same. Much of the game sees one of the characters patrol Gotham at night, dealing with the various crimes and learning more behind the mystery of Batman's "demise" and what it means for the city. Whereas in the daytime, you are in the Batcave known as the Belfrey where you can interact with the Bat Family, train and sharpen your skills and even play a few retro video games presumably from the Midway Arcade. Some RPG elements are used such as equipping weapons and costumes and also a skill tree too. Activities in Gotham aside from crimes being committed (where stealth or head on combat can be used) include unlocking fast travel points, finding various crates containing things and more.

The fame overall is not so much innovative and the gameplay is pretty average. But where it really succeeds is in the characterization of the main characters and also the story too. Sure the story may be a bit predictable for the hard-core fan, but it's a well done one and the soundtrack is top notch. 7/10
