So previously, I reviewed the majority of the released films that are part of the Conjuring cinematic universe. I missed this one out, mainly because there is some debate about whether it's part of it or not. The director believes it's not, despite a nod to the series in the form of a character that first appeared in the first Annabelle film. It's also not part of the boxset I bought some time ago, so yeah, a lot of debate about it. Still, though, I felt it was worth checking out despite the negative reception and the loose connections to the franchise. I mean it's also being made by New Line Cinema who distributed the whole franchise so far which is also an indication that it's connected. It's also the shortest one in the franchise, too, at only 93 minutes long. Let's have a look and see if this is worth your time or best being left alone:
The year is 1973, and we are in Los Angeles. Patricia Alvarez (played by Patricia Velásquez) is a mother of two children who, due to questionable actions, is taken away by authorities while her two sons are put in a child-services shelter. A mysterious entity, that resembles a woman in a white dress, attacks the boys, which leads to a series of events that causes the being known as La Llorona to be unleashed onto the world and must be stopped.
Films that are usually unsettling, are pretty good generally. This one isn't perfect and does kind of feel like it wants to be in the Conjuring universe. But keeps reserving itself from being associated aside from a few nods and a character from that franchise. Personally, it's not a fantastic film and if you were wanting to complete your collection of Conjuring films, this one I would say is optional as it's only loosely connected with the director saying it's not and others saying it is. So up to you really, but for me, it's a keeper. But not one I would be watching all the time. 6/10
