Random TV Season Review - Picard (Season 3)

While most of our parents, aunts and uncles will have been bought up with the Original Series of Star Trek, my generation (the Millennials) have been more bought up with the Next Generation series and its many spin-offs and films. Of course, I say that, but I myself didn't actually watch it all until lockdown occurred in 2020/2021. To this day, I still feel that those shows, while not perfect, helped re-establish Star Trek as a major franchise and long after a hiatus in the late 00s and early 2010s, it's back with shows on a more major budget to make them feel like a blockbuster film if anything else. One such show was a continuation of The Next Generation, with a particular focus on Jean-Luc Picard (reprised by Sir Patrick Stewart) and that show would be known simply as Picard. Having reviewed the previous two seasons and of course The Next Generation, we are now here with the final season of Picard, so let's see if it's good or now. Engage!

Much of this season sees Picard reunite with his old crew from way back when, as they face a mysterious new enemy with connections to the changelings and Borg. Both forming an alliance of sorts to take down Starfleet from the inside. Also, Jack (played by Es Speleers), Picard's son, is seemingly getting hunted down for reasons, and it's up to the crew to find out why and more.

This finale to not just Picard, but to the Next Generation overall, is satisfying. It has the humour of the old show back, its budget feeling like the films they did all those years ago, and has a number of dramatic moments too. Plus a multitude of callbacks to events that transpired, including the Dominion War in DS9 and Kathryn Janeway's pathogen attack in Voyager. A great final season to what has been a great encore to the Next Generation crew. 9/10
