So as many of you know, I love games that have some nostalgia value to it and this game falls very much under that category. It's presented as if it's an old black and white Japanese action film, with film grains and everything. So very much a game I decided to give a try. I did attempt to record it for one of my Humble Choice YouTube videos, but it was a case of either Xbox Game Bar or the game playing up as I recorded it. May do another video one day, but with OBS instead. But it was a pretty cool looking game to play and one I hope to return to playing again one day. It's among the many published games by Devolver Digital whom, for the past few years, have poked fun at the whole idea of streamed events to showcase people's games. They even made a game doing that at one point, too. Anyway, let's get to it:
Set during the Edo period of feudal Japan, a young swordsman, known as Hiroki, embarks on a quest for vengeance when his home village is burned to the ground. This quest would ultimately lead him to confronting Yomi, the Japanese underworld and the evils of his past. The game is a side-scrolling action one with light and heavy attacks that Hiroki can use. As is usual for this kind of game, light attacks are fast but don't do much damage whereas heavy ones are slow, but deal more damage. A well-timed block against enemies will allow Hiroki to perform a counter-attack, and all attacks and other abilities can be combined to your heart's content. New weapons become available as you progress in the game. The game will alternate between fights and exploration. While it is primarily a liner experience, Hiroki can find hidden areas if he (and you the player) so choose. Such hidden areas can give him more health and stamina, while finding a shrine will replenish both.
As I mentioned, this game has a nostalgia value to it and plays out like those old action films from way back when. I had fun playing this game and look forward to the day when I can play it again. It's a shame I couldn't show you all, the gameplay on YouTube, but it's something I'll think about returning to at a later date. 9/10
