Throughout much of the Star Trek franchise, we hear stories about this man called Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) who despite only ever appearing once before in the unaired pilot of the Original Series, we learn that he is the predecessor of James T. Kirk (played this time by Paul Wesley) in that he was the captain of the USS Enterprise before he took over. With his story not really being told much since his first and only appearance in that pilot, a show focused on his time as the captain became a reality. This show is part of the current set of Star Trek shows and serves as a spin-off of Discovery in an attempt to help expand the Star Trek universe. While adding some familiar faces and all that into the mix. It's set during the 10-year period that leads up to the events of the Original Series so lets at long last, watch the legend of Chris Pike as it finally becomes a reality:
Season 1
It's the 23rd Century and Pike and his crew, begin their initially 5 year mission on the Enterprise to find strange new worlds, seek out new life and civilizations and... well you know the rest of it by now. Pike is initially hesitant with returning to space exploration, but does so after confiding in Spock and going on a rescue mission to save his Number One (played by Rebecca Romijin) and bear witness to the very top secret Discovery mission. Among this season's highlights include Spock's relationship with his fiancée T'Pring (played by Gia Sandhu), encounters with the Klingons and the Romulans and a vision of the future that Pike learns he could prevent. I think overall, this show replicates the look and feel of the current Star Trek shows with its cinematic looking visuals, but adds a sense of nostalgia with the Starfleet uniforms, call backs to things that have happened before and familiar music. Plus an intro that reminds me of the intro sequences to the Original Series and The Next Generation. Nostalgia aside, the very soulful cast play their parts well, especially Ethan Peck, who plays a very convincing Spock. Yeah, no complaints really, it's all pretty good. 9/10
Season 2
Pike and his crew continue their five-year mission on the Enterprise in this season and among the challenges they face this time around, they come across 2 time travellers from the future who until now, have never experienced the third dimension (in other words, it's a Lower Decks crossover) and burst into song a little later on. All ending in a cliffhanger that sees the return of the Gorn which brings disaster for Pike and his crew, among other things. Another strong season that adds a bit of humour and a lot of serious character development. Plus, I forgot that there is a bit of eye candy this season too. But all in all, another solid season, and I look forward to seeing how they resolve the cliffhanger.
So there you have it. Another winner for the universe, where people boldly go where no one has gone before. Very strange indeed, but in the best of ways. 9/10
