Video Game Review - Injustice: Gods Among Us

After the success that the Mortal Kombat reboot had, I had high hopes for what NetherRealms (formally Midway Games and WB Games Chicago) would have next, and when I heard that DC were giving them full access to all their properties, I was very hyped. Seeing this game in action, pretty much told me that this was made for DC fans more than regular gamers, especially when it comes to the story (which despite being very unoriginal, is OK for the most part) as well as the many iconic characters that are in it. Could this be the DC heroes at their finest? Let's find out:

In a alternate reality, The Joker tricks the Man of Steel into thinking that he was the culprit behind the death of Lois Lane and as such, destroyed Metropoilis to presumably guarantee this to happen (Now this isn't the first time that Joker has done something like this as in various Batman stories, he killed Batman's friends, his allies but the majority of them have led to his death). Not only that, but Lois had Superman's unborn child in her before she died and as you would expect, Superman is furious with him and kills him in front of Batman, before starting a new world order which has the 2 heroes go against each other with a team of superheroes on each side. As there is a DC multiverse in the world of DC comics, Superman's team discover the Justice League universe where the Joker's plan has failed and use some sort of transportation to get a number of heroes from that universe into theirs to stop Batman's team and then its just an all out war between heroes and villains. As I said, it's not really that original in regards to the story as it has in some way been done before, but nevertheless, if anybody could get that into a fighting game, it would be NetherRealms. The graphics are just your standard HD graphics so there isn't really anything innovative about that, but despite that, the game does it's best to try and be just as good as some of the more recent (and good) DC video games and it does a good job of it. As with Mortal Kombat, the fighting in this game isn't really as hard as games like the Capcom fighting games (from personal experience anyway) in regards to the controls and so forth. It has all your usual fighting game modes including a good but not great multiplayer mode, challenges, tutorials and so on. Unlike most fighting games where you have a number of rounds to KO your opponent, this game has each character have 2 health bars and once both bars are out, they are then KOed as it were. Each character has their own set of moves which stay true to their comic book counterparts and makes the game more epic than it should be. And as for characters, the majority of the more popular characters are here and are all great.

Now I have been following the weekly battle arena for this and that just made me more hyped for this game. Overall, it's a fun and enjoyable game that any DC fan like myself will love. Its not game of the year standard in my opinion, but it's very clear that NetherRealms put a lot of work into this and if the quality of DC games remain at this level, then Warner Bros may stand a chance in the 8th generation of gaming. Great job guys. 8/10
