In his 75th year of being one of the greatest superheroes of all time, we get a reboot to the live action Superman films, with British actor Henry Cavill being the first British actor to take on the title role of Clark Kent/Superman/Kal-El. With Zack Snyder on the director's chair and Christopher Nolan producing, along with a lot of competition in the season of summer films, is this retelling of Superman's origins any good? Let's find out:
I really don't see any point in me going on about the plot because it's a retelling of a story that a lot of us DC fans, have heard to death, but I will say that it does show Krypton from a different perspective than the one we're used to and General Zod has never been more insane and diabolical. Kal-El is the last son of Krypton and arrives on Earth as a baby and has to come to terms with being on a human planet, while also keeping control of his powers. One day he goes to the Arctic and comes across a Kryptonian scout spaceship which he enters and meets a hologram of his father, Jor-El (played by the normally dull, but actually pretty good here, actor, Russell Crowe) who explains to him, everything that he needs to know about his origins and how he should use his powers for the good of humanity. He does just that and befriends Daily Planet reporter, Lois Lane (played by Amy Adams) in the process. But when Zod arrives to enslave mankind for his evil plans (which sounds very similar to the plot of Transformers 3), it's up to Kal-El who adopts the name Superman, to stop him and his minions.
Now taking into consideration that this was done by Snyder and Nolan who are great when it comes to making film adaptations of DC comic books, this film was OK but not great. As with all of Snyder's films, the visuals are great and everyone does at least give their performances, their all (even if they look dull on screen), but it adds nothing new to the character of Superman, other than trying to retell his origins, with a bunch of disasters, explosions and a whole lot of epicness. That's it. 8/10
