Video Game Review - The Wonderful 101

Now in all honesty, I didn't really know what to expect from this game. In fact, I wasn't even that interested in it, in the first place. But because Nintendo were making such a big deal about it in their Direct videos, I decided to check it out and I will say this now that it won't be everybody's cup of tea. So let's get to it:

The game has a very unoriginal plot where aliens have invaded Earth and want to destroy it, so Earth relies on a team of superheroes called the Wonderful 101 who must work together to stop this alien threat. While their name is the Wonderful 101, the team itself actually has 7 members each with their own superpower that they can use against the aliens using super powered citizens to make them bigger and stronger. The Superpowers that they have are used in a similar way to a Green Lantern in that they don't use their own body to fight the enemy, but you need super citizens to make them bigger and stronger. To do that, you just draw a line around the citizens and they will then become temporary allies to your team, and that's where the Wii U Gamepad comes in. In addition to that, each superpower can only be triggered by drawing shapes of some sort to activate them and sometimes you may need to use superpowers to get from one place to the other. Its much like a turn based RPG in that you can only get the items you need between missions and you need some gears to buy them (which you can get while doing a mission). I was quite surprised with the difficulty settings, expecting it to have the usual Easy, Normal and Hard, but instead you get Very Easy, Easy and Normal (not really the greatest thing to come by in a game) but the game will be very hard especially in the fights and especially as the game can be very frustrating at times as well. But I will admit, ti does have a few references to those shows that rely heavily on special effects and it can be very funny as well. But I personally thought it would've been better to have less stereotypical characters in the game, just saying.

So the game is OK. Its not a strong Wii U game and it won't be for everyone and I just feel that its too predictable on what's happening and having stereotypical characters will not make a great game. But having said that, once you start playing it, you'll get used to the craziness in it. But as I said, its not for everyone. 7/10
