Video Game Series Review - ModNation Racers

With Mario Kart taking the world by storm, a number of video game developers and publishers wanted to compete against Nintendo, but failed to live up to the standard of Mario Kart. Sony decided they wanted in on the action and instead of making a game using their already established properties, they instead opted for a new IP and we got ModNation Racers (though we did get a LittleBigPlanet one afterwards that was made by the same people behind this game, but that's ok). In my opinion, this is one of Sony's ambitious routes and one that actually may only just surpass Mario Kart. So let's take a look:

PS3
So the game has a story that's basically your typical racer story where you have this guy who wants to be a racer and wants to do it in style, but his family have mixed feelings about it, but let him/her take part anyway with a lot of other racers competing in the championship also. The racing part plays out similarly to Mario Kart with each track being based on a particular theme and the karts being able to create boosts from drifting and plenty of power ups to behold which can be levelled up like in LEGO Racers. But what makes this game unique is the creativity that you have the power of using. I'm talking about creating your own karts, characters and even race tracks. I know those things have been done before in other racing games, but not at this scale. Honestly, its actually one of the few racing games that despite having similarities to other games, is actually very good. It builds upon the creative side of Sony that came from LittleBigPlanet while also doing its best to be a unique racing game and its done very well. I wouldn't say it surpasses Mario Kart in any way, but it does and damn good job of trying and I just wish more racing games can be as fun and creative as this. 9/10

Road Trip
So this is effectively the same game but on a portable platform. It is kind of disappointing that after what the last game did, we get a game that's pretty much the same thing with very little things added. Still, at least we can play the game on the move, I guess that's something and the graphics are nice for Vita standards. 7/10

Despite a promising start, I guess we'll never know if this series will continue or not. Though that being said, we did get a LittleBigPlanet spin-off which I guess is something, but for what the games are, its Sony's take on Mario Kart and its a good one, but not enough to be as superior as Mario Kart, but nice try anyway Sony. 8/10
