Video Game Series Review - Mirror's Edge

So here's the thing. While EA are universally hated by a majority of the gaming community because of their bad business practices, leaving Steam to do their own Steam thing which ultimately failed and making the same sports games every year, that doesn't mean that they haven't made a good game for all the time they have been around. Brutal Legend while initially not part of EA to begin with is a cult classic. Mass Effect has given EA a franchise that is nerdy enough to get Pop! figures. They have Star Wars at their disposal. And Battlefield shows Call of Duty how to make a good warfare game without the copy and paste method. Today, we look at one of EA's more innovative games which is Assassin's Creed in the future, from a first person perspective and its parkour and free running all the way. This is Mirror's Edge, one of a handful of EA games that's innovative and looks great. So let's have a look at the original game and its reboot:

Mirror's Edge
The game takes place in what looks like either the future or the present if you were in a futuristic city like Dubai. Our main character is Faith (voiced by Jules de Jongh) who goes out to help save her sister who is being framed for a murder she may or may not have committed. As with games like Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge has you use a variety of parkour and free running moves to get from place to place and when inside this big city, there is plenty of chances to do those very things. However what makes this game unique in that regard compared to similar games, is that its all seen from a first person perspective, therefore giving you a true experience like no other. Similar to Sunset Overdrive, the game also encourages you to produce a chain of moves as you progress through the game which I believe is to keep Faith going and not tire her out. As much as I want to explain the other things in the game, I feel that there is no need to seeing as I already explained the main things the game will get you to do and its fantastic. Even though free running and parkour are things you see in many games today, its never been at the scale this game puts it at. A fantastic game not to be overlooked. 9/10

Catalyst
So in a surprising turn of events, rather than a sequel or prequel, we instead get a reboot of the original game with my understanding being that they hope to start a new trilogy of games. How that's going to work, I just don't know. But anyway, the game follows that familiar superhero/Disney scenario where the protagonist's parents are killed and the aftermath makes the protagonist become who she is at the events of the game. Its a bit more complicated to explain this time, but the story isn't why you've bought the game. You bought the game to do exactly what the last game had. Parkour and free running with a first person perspective and that is indeed what we get here. It has a more open world feel to it this time which is great and a few things are added here and there along with an overhauled combat system. Personally I found the first game to be better, but this game is still pretty good and shows that not every first person game has to be a shooter of some kind and that's great. 8/10

So I find both games to be great, but the very first one is the best one in my opinion. Its innovative, fun and shows that not every first person game has to be a shooter. 9/10
