Random Video Game Review - Undertale

Of all the games that I have reviewed on this blog, this one is among the most difficult. I mean its been talked about for such a long time and its hard to imagine that a game created using RPG maker with NES like graphics could get as big as it is. A lot of games often have you question your decisions and your motives, but for this one, it takes it one step further. Further questioning if you have a heart to spare your enemies or are too heartless enough to kill them all. While I probably won't be able to bring anything new to the table that's already been said about this game in other reviews, I hope that you understand that this game really is a game worth talking about. So whether you want to do a Pacifist run, a Genocide run or a Neutral run, let's dive into this game:

We meet a human who is sent to what can be described as the underworld. There it meets a flower called Flowey who harmless enough attempts to teach the gameplay mechanics to the human, but when its true purpose is revealed, Flowey then gets defeated by Toriel, a motherly like goat monster who takes the child in and gives it the option to stay or go. From then on, the player can choose one of three routes, each one having some good things and bad things. The graphics may not be anything spectacular which you often find with RPG Maker, but its actually the gameplay which is where the game shines. As you play through the game, you get to choose whether to kill your enemies in Earthbound like battles, or spare them through various means. Whichever route you choose to do will very much alter the ending that you get and you can play this many times to try out different routes that are provided to you. All the characters have their own unique personalities and they will either be hostile or not depending on which route you take. Of all the horror games I have played this far, this is one that for once, doesn't have jumpscares per say, but instead has some bizarre monsters and characters where looks can be deceiving and the dialogue of which can be altered when you do further playthroughs. Its even possible to complete the game without killing a single enemy. Hard to do yes, but you'll feel good about it afterwards.

There's no doubt in my mind that software like RPG Maker can help people make great games like this where its not about graphics, but the gameplay and the presentation and most importantly, story. I love decision making games and this is one that questions every move I make and whether or not I am a killer or a lover. Either way, its going to be a tough game to get through, But I loved it. Indie games are great and this just shows that games can be great without having to get to triple A quality that most big games tend to do. 9/10
