Video Game Review - Marvel VS Capcom Infinite

Its been a long time since the thrid game and since then, Disney have bought Marvel and have been able to re-acquire many of their characters with the exception of the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool (and to some extent Spider-Man who Disney have a 50/50 deal with Sony) as far as films go. While Capcom have been busy releasing games for most of their current franchises which for the most part have had a mixed to positive reception, some of which have been new IPs if anything. So let's see if the long break was worth it:

So as a first for the series, the game presents itself with a story mode and anyone who knows the Mortal Kombat VS DC story well, then this will sound familiar. Death (voiced by Alicyn Packard) from Marvel is visited by Jedah Dohma (voiced by David Kaye) from Capcom's Darkstalker series and the two propose an alliance to achieve a power greater than life and death on their respective worlds. In achieving this, Death calls upon the mad titan Thanos (voiced by Isaac C. Singleton Jr.) and the evil android Ultron (voiced by Jim Meskimen) from her world and sends them out to find two of the six Infinity Stones. During his mission, Ultron is caught by Sigma (voiced by Chris Tergliafera) from Capcom's Mega Man X series and the two forge an alliance which leads them to betray the others and take the Space and Reality stones for themselves. In doing this, they fuse and become one being called Ultron Sigma and plot to rid both worlds of biological life. With the Marvel and Capcom worlds formed, the heroes of the respective worlds form an alliance to take the being down before their very existence is wiped out. So aside from the story, another thing I notice is that many of the Marvel characters in the game are all the ones Marvel have the rights to which leaves out Deadpool, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four which Fox still own the rights to. I don't know if that's how its supposed to be, but considering that those characters are not in the game is kind of a major let down as some of those characters helped pave the way to make the games great. But saying that, the Capcom character selection isn't great either. Lots of missed opportunities and its largely all the well known characters (though kudos to them for retaining Dante's original look and not his controversial western look). Then there's the two fighter per side problem. While that's not a bad thing, the previous game had 3 either side so in some way, its a step back. But despite that, the game looks and feels more accessible than ever before and will certainly keep fans of either company occupied until the next big Marvel or Capcom thing.

So despite having a familiar and somewhat predictable story as well as a disappointing character selection, this game is ok. Its got some good characters in there and the gameplay is solid if anything. But you'd think after such a long time that it would be better than this. Well I guess there's always Marvel VS Capcom 5 and if anything, at least the Guardians of the Galaxy are in it finally. 7/10
