Video Game Review - Kirby Star Allies

So we've had Mario and we've had Zelda on the Switch so far. Next up is everyone's favourite pink ball of cuteness, Kirby. Now when it comes to the Kirby games, I have mostly played ports of older games (via Nintendo's virtual console service on Wii, 3DS and Wii U and game emulation) and only a handful of the newer ones. But today, I decided it's time to look at his newest game which also marks his debut on the Nintendo Switch. Let's take a peak before he sucks our souls:

One day on Kirby's home planet, a shower of hearts begin landing on the planet. While some of the inhabitants investigate and end up being possessed by it, Kirby meanwhile gains the ability to make friends by throwing a heart onto enemies. As such, Kirby sets out on a quest to investigate the hearts and learn to harness the power he got from them before chaos ensues. Anyone who plays the Kirby games will know that for the most part, they are 2D (2.5-D in this case) side scrolling platformers similar to the Mario games, but very different in more ways than one. Players control Kirby as you venture through various levels, making allies (each with their own abilities which can be combined from time to time), collecting items and sucking the living daylights out of his enemies. In some way, Star Allies can be seen as a celebration of the franchise due to its frequent references to earlier games in the series such as the appearance of the Dragoon from Air Ride and the combining ability gameplay being reminiscent of the like in 64: The Crystal Shards. The game also has a few fun minigames which almost resemble the minigames seen in the Mario Party series. And as for the graphics, it's definitely HD at its best as it is very colourful and pretty smooth too.

Whether you're a fan of the series or not, Kirby: Star Allies is a fun game. The levels are good, the amount of allies you can make add a lot of variety and its just a blast to play. Only issue I have with it is it's easy difficulty which for completionists is fine. But those of us wanting more of a challenge will be disappointed, but not completely. Would've also liked there to be some more minigames to try out, but I'm happy with the selection available. 8/10
