Random Video Game Review - A Way Out

You know, I don't think I have ever played a game where its only co-op and you either go with that or play the next game. To be honest, I'm fine with that. I think as long as the co-op side of things works, its OK. So made by the people who gave us the critically acclaimed Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, this is one game that believe it or not, lives up to the name and its title is of course the primary objective. Many of us gamers are no strangers to prison based gameplay as its been featured as part of much bigger games such as Mafia II, Assassin's Creed III, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and of course, The Escapists. It's pretty clear that this game took inspiration from many films set in prisons where the main character(s) try to escape and it is a very good concept that while has been explored, its only been a portion of an otherwise bigger game. So let's see if there truly is A Way Out:

The game focuses on two characters of which two players (either locally or online) can play as. The game starts in the present where Vincent (voiced by Eri Krogh) and Leo (voiced by Fares Fares) are both heading somewhere and begin to think about how they got to where they are. After each player chooses their character, the game then takes us to a prison of which Leo has been an inmate of for grand theft for a while and Vincent is the new guy. It then becomes clear that both of them have a common enemy that they both want to punish for what this enemy did to them and their loved ones. Upon getting to know each other, the duo then plan to escape the prison in the hopes to find their common enemy and take him down while evading the authorities along the way. So as previously mentioned, this is a 2 player game with no single player mode so basically if you want to play it, make sure you have friends or family who want to play it with you. Otherwise, you're screwed and you'll have to play something else. Now while the trailers made it out that you be going in different paths, that does happen some of the time, but most of the game sees Leo and Vincent together which is fine. The game feels like an interactive cinematic prison break film which works really well and gets us in the mood for playing this game. It is a decision based game so expect there to be a lot of alternative choices and paths to take and just have fun.

It's a good game. It's got basic, but very good gameplay to keep two players occupied for a while. It does live up to the name, though I often wonder if it should've been given another name seeing as the prison part of it can be completed in about an hour and a bit. Its got good graphics that gives it that cinematic feel which is great. And its a lot of fun too. Not a lot of things in the way of completion bonuses, but it is a decision based game so you can always start a new game and experiment with the choices you have. Good game from a great indie developer and I look forward to their next game. 8/10
