Random Movie Review - Warcraft

So after having reviewed all the other video game films of 2016, we now finish it with a look at the very first video game film of that year. All over the world, there are loads of players who play the hugely popular MMORPG known as World of Warcraft as well as the games that came before it that were part of the franchise. Its widely known for being the longest running MMORPG out there mainly due to its popularity, its ongoing support from the developers and the series of expansions that have been made for the game. Its also the most subscribed game of its genre and even holds a Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers. So it came as no surprise that we would get a film adaptation of the franchise which itself serves as a prequel to the series talking about how it all began. Does it live up to expectations? Let's find out:

So the best way to describe the film without being overly complicated is that the homeworld of the orcs known as Draenor is slowly crumbling to pieces caused by a form of magic known as fel magic. In a desperate attempt to ensure the survival of the orcs, a warlock known as Gul'dan (played by Daniel Wu) unites the clans calling them the Horde and tries to open a portal to free other orcs from another place in the world. However, his methods for the survival of his kind seems to conflict with the humans and a desperate attempt to thwart his plans soon comes into fruition.

For fans of the series, this will likely please them. But for everyone else, the film is just a mess. The acting is not entirely great and can be seen as predictable. The film much like with the Star Wars prequels and The Hobbit films is another CGI overkill which granted that it is based on a fantasy franchise, could have been handled better. I suppose the only good thing is that it's got good visuals. But everything else about it is not great especially the narrative which coming from a game that doesn't delve too much into deep storytelling, is probably the biggest reason why the film didn't do so well. But as it is with many video game films, it's nothing like the games and you are likely to have a better time with the games than watching this mess of a film. 4/10
