So I'm going to start by saying that at the time of writing this review, I haven't seen any Evil Dead film before and after watching this series. I know I know I should really watch the films before I dare look at the series. But I felt that I know enough about it to at least try and make sense of it. I mean the whole franchise is about a chainsaw wielding mad man who fights all known forms of evil demons to protect his loved ones. Surely that should be enough to warrant me to review the series. Anyway enough rambling, so after years of not having any Evil Dead stuff happening, film creator Sam Raimi went about developing a TV series to act as a sequel to his films while also showing the Evil Dead world to a new generation with Bruce Campbell reprising his long serving role of Ash Williams. It lasted for three seasons after which it became another beloved show cancelled due to low viewing ratings. So let's see what Ash battles in this long awaited series:
Season 1
Set thirty years after the end of Army of Darkness, Ash has started enjoying life in a trailer working for a Value Stop department store while spending his evenings womanising in dive bars. However when coming across a demonic face on an otherwise normal woman and soon learning of other evil happenings going on, Ash realises that the curse he thought was long destroyed, has returned and must put an end to it. Although reluctant and unsure at first, his co-workers Pablo (played by Ray Santiago) and Kelly (played by Dana DeLorenzo) team up with him to go about just that though they may be battling more than what they bargained for. Going into this without having seen any of the other films, I actually really enjoyed it. Its full of great one liners, has a lot of funny and action packed moments and its just a really great horror fest to get yourselves into. And I'm sure you will all be in for a good time as the show progresses. 9/10
Season 2
In the previous season, our heroes met the so called writer of the Necronomicon Ruby (played by Lucy Lawless) who in this season finds out that her demonic children have betrayed her. In an attempt to regain control of them, she seeks help from Ash who despite old grudges forms a temporary alliance with her. Though as time goes on, Ash realises that he can prevent all of this from happening by stopping his young self from ever seeing the Necronomicon and goes about trying to do that. Though the question is if he can actually do it at the potential cost of never having met his friends in the first place. This season ups everything a great deal with horror, humour and even some drama too. It also shows Ash taking up uneasy alliances to get what he wants and allows him and the others to get character development when needed. Great fun all around. 9/10
Season 3
With everything having seemingly gone back to normal, Ash reunites with a former love of his and realises that he has a daughter named Brandy (played by Arielle Carver-O'Neill) who is initially distrustful of him and more so when an alternate Ruby emerges and in the form of a school consular goes about trying to dissuade Brandy. More demonic creatures also appear and soon enough, the world becomes their playground which prompts Ash and co. to get into action one last time. But with that and the emotional baggage he carries, it may be a one way trip for Ash. Although a fourth season would be nice as this season ends on a very small but still a cliffhanger nonetheless, this season otherwise ends the show on a high note. Everything is upped again plus we get a bit of emotional drama too with the addition of Ash's daughter Brandy. Plus while we may never get an Evil Dead thing again after this, it was great while it lasted. Just hope we can get more. 9/10
So overall, its a good horror series to sink your teeth into. Its fun, horrific, intense at times and just an overall great horror series that anybody can get into with or without having seen the films. Though I guess seeings the films would help a bit in the long run. 9/10
