Random Movie Review - Central Intelligence

Two people who got into acting from two different backgrounds. One is a comedian who has done many stand up shows and turned to acting some time later. The other is a former WWE (back then known as WWF) wrestler who much like his fellow wrestlers turned to acting. So a wrestler and a comedian in a buddy film. Sounds interesting, but also sounds disastrous so let's get to it:

In 1996, a boy called Calvin (played by the comedian, Kevin Hart) is being honoured as being the only pupil that is likely to succeed in life. But during his acceptance speech, a bunch of bullies throw into the hall an obese and naked CGI Robbie (played by the wrestler, Dwayne Johnson) in which the whole school laugh at him with the only sympathetic people being Calvin and his girlfriend (played by Joe West's love interest in The Flash, Danielle Nicolet). Many years later, Calvin has married his girlfriend but their marriage is crumbling and he's not at all satisfied with his job as a forensic accountant. Calvin soon gets a friend request from a man claiming to be Bob Stone who later ends up being a more muscular Robbie. However, Calvin later learns that Robbie may not be a safe person anymore and goes on a mission with him to clear his name for the sake of friendship and to save his marriage if nothing else.

Although the film feels like a recipe for disaster, it actually isn't all as bad as I thought it would be. There is great unexpected chemistry between Hart and Johnson who have to work with a script that just isn't all that great. It be a film that's worth watching whenever it comes onto television (or Netflix in my case in preparation for this review) even if it looks like a film that is destined to not do so well. I guess when you have people like Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in a film, you want it to do well but this is what happens when the script is lazily written. Still though, it does manage to throw in a few laughs here and there. But I guess some of us Hart and Johnson fans were expecting more than what we got. 7/10
