AC10: Random Movie Review - Walt Before Mickey

You know after so many years, its hard to imagine that such a company like Disney could be the behemoth that it is today. Sure we may have mixed feelings about them buying Marvel, Pixar, LucasFilm, The Muppets and more recently 21st Century Fox and abusing the power that they have over other companies like them, but many years ago it was just a small company much like how Valve started out before Steam became a thing. So today we're looking at a film that tries to talk about the life of Walt Disney himself and how his small company became what it is today. So let's take a look:

With the film narrated by Walt Disney (played by Thomas Ian Nicholas), we start when he was thirteen and had an interest in animation and film. Years later in 1919 following his time serving the Red Cross, Walt moves in with his brother Roy (played by Jon Heder) and his girlfriend Edna (played by Natasha Sheritt) with the former later moving to California for medical reasons and Walt himself meets Ub Iwerks (played by Armando Gutierrez) who would later work with him on building up Walt's career as an animator and would help him bring about the Disney studios and create Mickey Mouse.

So after I saw the film, I found out that it was made on a very low budget and although I agree that the film makers had good intentions with this film, it ultimately ended up not being all that good. Sure it does talk about key moments in Walt Disney's history such as creating Oswald the Rabbit for Universal, creating Mickey Mouse himself as the mascot for his own company and all the trouble that Walt faced during the early days of his company. But it loses the charm and spark that the actual events had and as one critic has said, it feels like watching a film that was based on a student's report on Walt rather than what actually happened. I think had it been made by Disney themselves, it would have done much better. But unfortunately on this occasion, it falls rather flat and just doesn't work. But hey there's always two other films out there like this one and actually feel like a story about the man behind the mouse even though one of them isn't all about him (I'll be reviewing those two films later this month). 6/10
