For a number of years, I have been pretty critical of anyone who does a film that Disney previously did that's based on something. I would say that Disney tend to do better with most adaptations of things but there have been a few stinkers as well. That being said though, as a reviewer I tend to keep an open mind about any film that is based on something that Disney did already. So today we are going to look at a version of The Jungle Book of which Disney have done two adaptations of as well as a few lesser known films as well in their Jungle Book franchise. This one is done by Warner Brothers and directed by the master of motion capture Andy Serkis. So chances are that even if its not as good as Disney's own takes on the story, at least it was made by some trustworthy people even if they themselves have made some bad choices over the years. So let's see if this film has the bare necessities to be good:
Its largely the same story as the Disney films in which the tiger Shere Khan (voiced by a dragon, a detective, a master of the mystic arts and someone who ironically played someone called Khan in another film, Benedict Cumberbatch) breaks the jungle law and kills a human family leaving only one child alive. The black panther known as Bagheera (voiced by Nolan's Batman, Christian Bale) is drawn to the scene and chooses to rescue the man-cub and goes about introducing him to a wolf pack. Although having some reservations, the wolf pack agree to protect and raise him much to the annoyance of Shere Khan. And the rest of the film is largely as it was with Disney in which the man cub grows up and must decide to either return to his people or become a hero destined to protect the jungle from all manners of evil.
Although I do like how visually impressive it is, it goes without saying that the visuals out weighs the rest of the film. The all star cast act fine with what they got for a script, but it is literally almost exactly the same story had two of the main characters acted the same way as they did in Disney's own takes. So yeah not a great adaptation, but its good if all you care about is visuals over everything else. 7/10
