Call me old fashioned, but I think for many of us a bucket list is just one of these things that we'd like to have just so that we can experience things before we pass on. So it comes as no surprise that a film based on this concept would come about and one with two big names in it too. A bucket list is one of the best things to have in life as it makes you want to do stuff you wouldn't normally do and do it with someone you enjoy hanging out with (or not). So let's see how the Explaining Man and the Insane Smile Man do their thing in this film:
The film focuses on two old men who one day get diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and spend time together in a ward. The ward in question just so happens to be in a hospital that one of the men called Edward Cole (played by Jack Nicholson) bought recently. Despite wanting his own private room even though he stated that the hospital rooms should be a duo layout, Cole eventually manages to make a friend in his fellow cancer patient, car mechanic Carter Chambers (played by Morgan Freeman) who gets Cole interested in a list he has been making. The list in question is actually his own personal bucket list and with some support and encouragement from Cole, the duo set out to do all the things on the list before they pass on while also revealing some hidden truths about themselves.
Although I'd expect nothing less than good acting from these two great actors, the film itself could do with a bit more work. Both the big stars do a superb job of acting in what feels like watching them out of their traditional roles and into something that wants to inspire people, but ultimately just feels like your everyday buddy film. I mean I personally found some enjoyment out of it, but I'd say check out Nicholson and Freeman's other works if you want a bit more than a buddy comedy film from these two Academy Award acting veterans. 7/10
