I know this may be cheating, but seeing as Netflix calls it a film, I am therefore going to treat it as such. So growing up in the 90s, you get a lot of great cartoons from Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Fox Kids and Nickelodeon which nowadays are seen as those channels being at their best. But of course there are some of us out there who want to destroy our childhoods by making theories on them such as the cast of Ed, Edd N Eddy being comprised of people of different time periods all in some kind of purgatory or Courage the Cowardly Dog being more scary than many of us thought. But it always a nice thing to see these shows bought back for one off specials like this or get a full blown reboot to tailor to a new generation while keeping older fans happy. So here we have Rocko's Modern Life which was a cartoon that can be best described as one tailored to families due to its use of adult jokes and innuendos as well as having some satire in there as well. So after 23 years, its back for a one off special film on Netflix so let's get to it:#
Twenty years after being sent into space at the end of "Future Shlock" (said to be the series finale by the creators despite the episodes not airing in the order they intended), Rocko (reprised by Carlos Alazraqui) and his friends manage to get his home sent back to O-Town. Upon returning home, the gang realise that a lot of time has passed and it no longer being the 90s, there are a lot of 21st century things like social media, drones, computers, streamers and all sorts of other things. As his friends enjoy their newly found lives, all Rocko cares about is seeing his favourite show the Fatheads. But when he realises that they haven't been on air for a long time, he sets out on a quest to bring it back by any means by finding the show's creator (with some pretty hilarious results).
Having watched not all but some of the episodes of the original show, I think this special or film is great. It falls in line with some of the other NickToon films in that it doesn't change too many things and gives us a faithful film worthy of being like the cartoon its based on. A shame that it never aired on Nickelodeon like it should have, but having a place on Netflix is probably the best alternative there is. It probably will come back at some point, but if not this film is good in its own right (plus it resolves an issue surrounding the family of the Fatheads creator which is great). 9/10
