Normally it would be a video game post today, but I decided that I need a break from all the gaming I do. So its been such a long time since I last went to the west end in London and it felt so great to go back after so long. So here we have a show that is based on the 2007 film of the same name. I think we all know what its all about because its in the name. So let's see what the Adelphi Theatre gave us this time:
Set in the American South, our titular waitress called Jenna Hunterson (currently played by Lucie Jones) works in a pie diner and is trapped in a seemingly controlling and abusive relationship with her husband Earl (currently played by Peter Hannah). Despite enjoying the job of being a waitress and coming up with inventive and unusual names for the pie of the day (which for the most part seem to be based on her life), Jenna seeks a way out of her relationship with Earl and sees an opportunity in a pie contest to do just that. But an unexpected pregnancy may get in the way of things and so she starts to have an affair with her doctor Dr. Jim Pomatter (currently played by Gavin Creel) while also bearing witness to her co-workers finding love in unexpected ways.
This would be the sort of thing I would hate watching because most romantic comedies just aren't all that great. But with Waitress, that wasn't the case at all. It is very funny with a bit of Carry On like humour and the pie element gets some extra attention with the stage having two tall vertical pie displays and even some pie ice cream was among the merchandise being sold. Yeah, great fun and worth the money though I'd say couples are more likely to get a kick out of this than most other people. Just saying. 9/10
