Random TV Show Review - Swamp Thing (Season 1)

Its difficult to tell whether Swamp Thing is a hero or not. Like most of DC's characters, he was once a human but through various means became the monster that is Swamp Thing. Now for those of you who don't know, Swamp Thing is actually the name of several DC characters all sharing the same goal of protecting the green. But sometimes protecting the green can lead into doing some villainous stuff, though obviously unintentionally. Some of you may know him for being part of Justice League Dark which are a team that basically comprises of DC heroes that are more supernatural than the mainstream team. But anyway, many attempts have been made to get this being on screen. We have had a 90s TV series, an animated series, small appearances in other DC shows and even a couple of films too. So I may look at those other ones at a later date, but for now let's look at this one that only lasted one season:

Set on Earth-19 of Arrowverse's multiverse, a CDC doctor called Abby Arcane (played by Crystal Reed) returns home to Marias, Louisiana to investigate what is described as a deadly swamp virus. In doing so, she meets and bonds with disgraced scientist Alec Holland (played by Andy Bean). But when he tragically dies and a gigantic swamp like being claiming to be him takes his place (played by Derek Mears), Abby sets about figuring out the mysteries of the swamp while the being known as Swamp Thing goes about trying to figure out his existance and take on some bad people along the way.

A big problem that this show faced not long after the first episode premiered was the fact that it was getting cancelled after just one season. I personally hate that when it happens as it shows a lack of respect for the people that worked on it and clearly DC decided not to give it a chance. Maybe if it was cancelled after the whole season had been done, that would have been fine. But unfortunately some companies just don't want to give shows a chance and for a highly respected company like DC, this comes as quite a surprise. Anyway for the 10 episodes that we got in the end, it was pretty good. Kept to the point of the show all the way through with very little pacing issues that most superhero shows have and although dark, its a great show. Showing once again that despite being cancelled, risks pay off and fans do like risks. So shame on DC for not giving it a chance and I do hope we get to see more of this some time in the future. Until then, there's always the comics and his other appearances. 9/10
