Random Movie Review - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

When you hear a director like Quentin Tarantino doing another film, most of us would think that he has done loads of films. But the truth is that he has only done nine films. I know its crazy for a guy who is widely known as one of those directors that has a particular style of film making. So around when Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was made, Tarantino's usual distributor The Weinstein Company was never used this time. The reason; well it all came down to the whole Weinstein effect incident where the Weinstein brothers (or at least one of them) faced a series of sexual harassment charges. This then followed by some other big names like John Lasseter and Kevin Spacey also coming out from similar incidents which has in a way tarnished their once good names. So with his usual producers and distributors not being considered for any of his future films, Tarantino sought out another distributor. Following what sounded like a long bidding war, Sony Pictures won the rights to the film after agreeing to many of Tarantino's demands such as final cut privilege. So with an all star cast and all that happening, let's see if this film was worth it in the end:

Set in 1969 in Los Angeles, the film sees actor Rick Dalton (played by the great Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (played by the also great Brad Pitt) navigate a changing Hollywood where they attempt to find any work as much as possible. What follows is a series of events that change them both as people, and they get to work with the likes of Bruce Lee (played by Mike Moh) and for Booth, he gets into an ordeal with some hippies. Plus we also have another story involving actress Sharon Tate (played by Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie) who makes attempts to befriend Dalton while also enjoying her new life in Los Angeles.

There is lots that I like about this film. It's essentially a film about film making and the people behind said films back in the 60s. It's got lots of nostalgia to drool over, great dialogue that made Tarantino a household name and its like a battle of the highs and lows of Hollywood with great moments, bad moments with it all working out in the end for some main characters. So yeah give it a watch. 9/10
