Random Video Game Series Review - Learn Japanese to Survive

As an avid fan of anime, I have always been keen to learn Japanese seeing as some that are released in western parts don't get an English dub which is a shame, but I know for that sort of thing it takes a bit of time. So in my quest to learn the language, I came across these three games with the premise of course being that you have to learn Japanese to survive in the game. Sounds like good fun and sure enough they are with some challenges. So let's survive and learn at the same time:

Hiragana Battle
With each game you learn a new form of the language. Here we learn Hiragana which is the basic writing system used in Japanese. All the characters learn it like you do while engaging in all the usual RPG style of gameplay such as collecting items, engaging in battles and completing quests. While primarily an educational game and language tool, one thing I do like is how engaging the game is. Gone are the days when people my age play educational games that may have been OK when we were little but nowadays are just cringy. And then we see these games that are educational still, but add elements to make it fun and not cringy as it tailors to an older audience. So yeah worth the pennies definitely. 8/10

Katakana War
The next game focuses on Katakana which is used to write words of a different origin and is used to name things such as people, places and other things. Japan has been invaded by shape shifting monsters and its up to the main characters to defeat them while also learning Katakana along the way. Its almost in every way the same game, but with new characters, story, setting and of course a new type of Japanese to learn. Still good though. 8/10

Kanji Combat

For the last game of the series (for now probably), you get to learn Kanji which is basically a series of characters used in writing. Once again, you learn the language as you attempt to save Japan from monsters that take on the form of Kanji with pretty much the same things all over again. Now I get that sometimes recycling what worked first time around is the right way to go. But you often find that it can get repetitive after a while which is why games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty have to at least try to make the experience fresh with each game hence why the latter takes advantage of history being its playground and the former goes about bringing new stories and scenarios. For this last game (again for now), the same thing works because it gives us a new form of Japanese to learn to go with the game to keep things as fresh as it can get. 8/10

You know for a series of games that were made using RPG Maker and are educational, these aren't too bad. They don't cost a fortune and are worth your time if you want a more exciting way to learn things which for me is something I am really very keen on. They are under £1 on Steam at the moment during its sale so yeah check them out. 8/10
