Having already reviewed one Christmas musical this time around, I think it's time we looked at another. So Dolly Parton has been around for quite a long time and even with this film, she is still looking great as ever. For those of you who do not know of her, she is primarily a singer but also an actress, businesswoman and many other things. She is one of those celebrities that is multi-talented and has been working for nearly over 7 decades and is still going strong today. I wasn't sure what to make of this film at first, but I get that it's trying to do something original while borrowing elements from A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life among possibly many others. So let's see how this one plays out:
A bitter Scrooge like businesswoman called Regina Fuller (played by Christine Baranski) returns to her hometown to evict all its residents so that she can sell the land. All the residents are of course unhappy about it all and it's up to a homeless woman (who may not be all she seems) called Angel (played by Dolly Parton) to convince Regina to change her ways or face an everlasting amount of damnation.
I'm not all that keen on musicals that like to do songs every few minutes. Because sometimes that amount of music can be pointless and doesn't really move the story along. That isn't the case with this film I find as all the music ties very well into the story. But there is a bit too much of it. Nothing like Les Misérables where nearly every bit of dialogue is singing because there is plenty of talking in this film between songs. It's an OK film that has good visuals, great songs and a great cast. There is room for improvement, but its good for what it is. 7/10
