Random Movie Review - Tenet

Another film affected by the pandemic, but definitely one that would have been worth seeing in the cinemas. We all know what Christopher Nolan is like as a filmmaker. He has done a lot of films, and not one of them has been a complete and utter failure. He takes a concept or idea and turns it into an intense, action packed and edge of your seat film. Dreams within dreams was the idea for Inception while what space technology and travel could look like was the idea for Interstellar. He also wanted to give us the experience of what Dunkirk may have been like and also give us a more realistic take on Batman with the Dark Knight trilogy. All very good films which prove that he can make an idea work, but not everyone is into the films he has made. Some people have called his films boring and others just don't quite understand him as a filmmaker. From my point of view, you have to really be into films to understand and appreciate him and his work. It's for those reasons that he is still considered a great asset for Warner Brothers and is still doing films and other projects with them today, even as the company faces a merger with Discovery. So we have Nolan's latest film which explores the idea of manipulating the flow of time. Not an original idea, but he has a knack for making these things fresh. So let's take a look:

A CIA agent known only as "The Protagonist" (played by John David Washington), participates in an extraction operation at an opera house. His life is saved when a bullet becomes "un-fired" through a gunman, and he manages to seize an artefact which he soon loses following his capture by mercenaries and swallowing what he believed was a suicide pill, only to learn that it was all a test of loyalty. Protagonist is then recruited by the organization Tenet, and he learns that his mission would be to use the flow of time to change an event in the future that threatens to destroy the present world. All of this would involve him working with his handler Neil (played by Robert Pattison) and taking on a Russian oligarch (played by Kenneth Branagh) who happens to have the ability to communicate with the future. There is also the Russian's wife Kat (played by Elizabeth Debicki) who isn't happy with her marriage and helps the Protagonist any way she can.

Although difficult to follow at times, it's another masterclass film by the great Christopher Nolan. Everyone acts their parts really well, the visual effects are stunning, the way they go about the flow of time is just fantastic to watch and it kind of reminds me of some things Doctor Who did with their idea of manipulating time. Another great film by the guy who saved Batman and told Zach Snyder to not watch Josstice League. Can't wait to see what he does next. 9/10
