So now that I've watched everything from the Star Trek resurgence that started in the late 80s and ended in the early 00s (as well as Discovery which is another prequel to the original series besides Enterprise), I can now finally watch some of the more recent stuff without feeling confused. Many people really enjoyed The Next Generation series as well as not all but some of the films that it spawned. So many great and memorable characters and a few good storylines here and there. But with such a huge fanbase, of course there was always going to be a time when that particular series would get revisited, and thus we have Picard. Many of us would no doubt enjoy the many Star Trek comic books out there, but then there are those few that prefer things on screen. I like both mediums, but with the newer stuff trying to be more cinematic (similarly to a certain BBC sci-fi series), that could be a good thing. So let's take a look at this series, which has already been greenlit for two more seasons:
Jean-Luc Picard (reprised by Patrick Stewart) has resigned from Starfleet following the destruction of the planet Romulus at a time when Starfleet were scared of certain things. As he spends many days having dreams about his former comrade Data (reprised by Brent Spiner), he learns that there may be a way to find him and sets out to find Data's possible daughter. Though things aren't quite as straight forward as they used to be as Picard and his new crew deal with some old enemies, but meeting a few familiar faces too all the while trying to save the galaxy.
Now I know some fans have an issue with this show being too dark, but I'm actually OK with it. I mean at some point, a franchise is going to have that one dark entry that stands out, such was the point with Mass Effect 2 and Revenge of the Sith just to name a few. Leaving that aside, it is great to see the old gang again even if its more Picard as it should be, than the rest of the Next Generation gang. It's definitely more wanting to develop characters while giving us action scenes on a grand scale, and it does pretty well on those parts. Pacing is a bit slow sure, but you have to remember that we are exploring the further adventures of one of the oldest living captains in the franchise's history. Some twists and turns may not work out for new fans and this show is definitely for Next Generation fans. Not much more to say, but check it out and I look forward to seeing where this goes. 9/10
