It's been a long time since I last reviewed and watched a film based on real true events. It's also been a long time since I last saw a film like this. I find films about children that get separated from their families in a hostile environment to be quite difficult to watch. While I personally have had times when I got separated from my people when I was young, none of those times were in hostile environments. It's just a fear we have where we can be in an unfamiliar place, oblivious to any kind of hostility if any, and get separated. But that is what happens all over the world. Those appeal adverts are very much real and don't lie (though there are some that do, but it's very rare to find those particular ones). Anyway, let's take a look at this film:
It's 1986 and a young boy called Saroo (played by both Sunny Paway and Dev Patel) lives with his poor family. One night, he accompanies his older brother Guddu (played by Abhishek Bharate) overnight to find coal to trade for milk and food. Feeling tired, Saroo sleeps on a bench while his brother goes off to find said coal. But after a long period of time, Saroo wakes up to find that Guddu hasn't returned. One thing leads to another and he ends up getting very lost in crowds of people as he tried to find his way home somehow.
Like I said, this film is difficult to watch at first. But despite this, it shows us just how bad things can be for someone so young when they get lost. It's got great performances from Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman in particular and has fantastic visuals and cinematography. But as I said, it can be quite difficult to watch at first, but it does end on a happy note which makes it all worthwhile in the end. 9/10
