Yep they are at it again. Now, usually I don't do film reviews on Tuesdays, but if I'm being honest, this feels more like a feature length special than a movie. It's obviously a means to promote Space Jam: A New Legacy and you could call it a crossover of sorts because the central villains of the original film make an appearance. While many of us are not happy that these heroes are still going in this way, I have never really found any reason to hate the films or the cartoon. Sure, it's nothing like the OG Teen Titans and may just be a dumbed down version of that cartoon. But many of us forget that there are some genuinely great episodes and films from this cartoon, no matter how much we hate it. I mean, the first film was a satire of superhero films whereas the second bought back the OG Teen Titans in a spectacular multiverse travelling adventure. So who knows what's cracking in this one, but let's take a look:
On one summer day, the Nerdlucks from Space Jam pay the Titans a visit. Cyborg (reprised by Khary Payton) immediately recognizes them as the little aliens from the so-called "greatest sport film of all time" and has the Titans watch the film. Robin (reprised by Scott Menville) remains suspicious of them and their intentions while the rest of the Titans enjoy the film with each providing occasional commentary pointing out facts, problems, issues and butts (yes I do mean that) with occasional breaks here and there.
Clearly this special is an attempt to replicate what Mystery Science Theatre 3000 does, and it does a reasonable job of it. The interruptions aren't too bad, and I did chuckle at a few of them. The only issue I really have is that they don't watch the whole film. Much of the live action scenes are ignored, except for those scenes leading up to Michael Jordan landing in Looney Tunes world (because it wouldn't make much sense otherwise, I guess). Also, the majority of the licensed music from the film is replaced, possibly due to legal issues (and certain singers being naughty in the news recently). So if you were honestly expecting an actual crossover instead of seeing an alternative version of the film, prepare to be disappointed. But at least what their intentions were is spot on, if it wasn't what we were hoping to see. 7/10
