Random Video Game Review - Titan Quest

Let's go back to 2006 where the 7th generation of gaming had just begun. THQ was still around publishing and making games before going bust and then becoming THQ Nordic. Most of their games I never really got into, as they were known for publishing a lot of licensed movie tie-in games. But then you get games like the two de Blob games and this, that really showed that they were more than just a licensed game publisher. This game has had a mixed response since its launch, so I'm not really expecting anything big or groundbreaking here, so let's take a look:

Much of the game is set in the Ancient pre-Roman world, with the Greek titans being betrayed by the Greek gods and all that jazz that I have pretty much talked about a few times here through reviews of other things based on Ancient Greece. So I won't delve into that too much, as you play as this character who travels the land to defeat a group of Titans called the Telkines. This character serves as your avatar with limited customization options, with the game having an overhead camera and point-and-click gameplay. Some abilities are mapped using the keyboard, with parts of the map being taken over by fog because it has not been explored yet. As with most RPG games, players gain experience points by defeating enemies and completing various quests given to them by NPC characters. Granting them access to fresh skills and points which can upgrade your character in a variety of ways (though if you are familiar with RPGs like me, you'll no doubt know what ways I am on about). Quests as you'd expect are divided into main quests and side quests. Merchants are all around if you need to buy anything like health items, newer weapons and armour and so forth which you can also sell too. You got equipment slots too which can grant certain bonuses to your character. The battles use a hack and slash way of fighting, with the enemy being fought being determined by your mouse. Lots of weapon types and a cooldown meter to use, plus all fallen enemies can be looted. There is a skill tree too and several types of classes for your character. There is even a multiplayer mode too.

If I played this game in 2006, then chances are that I would find many of what's on offer to be new and innovative. But it's 2022 at the time of writing this, and I have played lots of RPGs that are very similar and play out just like this. It's an alright game that gives you what you pay for, but as far as the genre goes, it's not something that's going to wow or test you. Still alright for what it is though, and the design is still good even by today's standards. 7/10
