Random Movie Review - Barbie

Yep, it's time to look at this film. I have delayed myself long enough now and finally, I'm bringing this Barbieheimer meme to a close. I'll give credit to the very beautiful and gorgeous Margot Robbie for choosing not to be typecast as Harley Quinn and for being the leading lady in this film which, after watching it, bears obvious and not so obvious similarities to The Lego Movie. Made in the UK by the production company behind the Harry Potter films as well as Robbie's own LuckyChap production company, we're in for something that may come across as girly in the first instance. But may be more than meets the eye. Anyway, let's get this over and done with, shall we:

In this universe, there is a place called "Barbieland" where different variations of Barbie, Ken and some discontinued dolls, reside as outcasts due to their unconventional traits. The Kens spend most of their days at the beach, while the Barbies actually have real prestigious jobs. Beach Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) finds happiness when he is with his Barbie, the stereotypical one (played by Robbie), and seeks a closer relationship with her. But she rebuffs him every time. Starting at a dance party, stereotypical Barbie begins to have worries about mortality and starts experiencing things that lead her to question her very existence. Following advice from Weird Barbie (played by Kate McKinnon), she sets off into the real world to find the girl that plays with her doll and cure her afflictions. Encountering a few strange people and experiencing human things for the very first time, along the way.

From beginning to end, I enjoyed this film. As embarrassing as it is to admit, this is actually an OK film. Far from perfect sure, but has moments where it's thought-provoking, genuinely funny, meta in places and well acted whether it be for comedic purposes or not. It is also a very silly film, so don't go watching this with your serious face on. Actually try to see it as a film to just have a good time in if nothing else. The soundtrack is also pretty good and all the variants of the dolls are all well fleshed out. 9/10
