Random TV Season Review - Monstrous (Season 1)

Yep, its time to revisit the eastern part of the world and look at some more of their shows. Now, me being me, I prefer watching anything and everything in my own language as the audio track. I haven't been all too keen on the idea of having subtitles for something that doesn't have an English dub, but I decided this time to get over it, and just watch this one with English subtitles. Here in the UK, this show (which I understand is a one season only show at present) is on Now TV. First time I have ever seen something like this on that particular streaming service, but it looked interesting, and I like trying out different shows on all the streaming services I'm subscribed to. So let's check this out:

In a place called Jinyang, a local governor installs a statue of a Buddha's head in the town hall. Remaining arrogant and reckless of the power this statue has within, he opens it up as a tourist attraction, remaining unaware of it being cursed. Later on, an occult specialist called Jung Ki Hoon (played by Koo Kyo Hwan) is employed by some monks to find the statue (which is revealed to be known as Gwibul) and attempt to prevent further destruction.

Despite its short length and how self-contained the story is, this show is pretty decent. The cinematography is very ominous and used very well for that effect. It may have some jump scares, but does well in making the show very creepy in places. Something I'm not keen on, at all, is using flashbacks to fill up a show's running time, but the ones used here are necessary and used well. Definitely one show that will keep you guessing and have you at the edge of your seat for the entire length of it. It's pretty much what I'd expect to see from a supernatural thriller, regardless of where in the world, it was filmed and all that. 8/10
