TV Season Review - One Piece (2023)

Yep, it's time to look at another Netflix adaptation of a manga turned anime. One Piece is effectively The Simpsons of manga and anime in that it has yet to find its ending and even with this adaptation, the chances of it finding its ending any time soon, is unlikely. Of course, Netflix have had a reputation of doing adaptations of Japanese media, but they all end up not doing very well. But people have praised this for being faithful to the franchise. This is actually the first time I decided to get into it or try to, so my review will be solely about this show, with no comparisons to the anime or manga. However, I say that having played a couple of the video games, so not completely hopeless. Anyway, let's check this one out:

The series, like the anime and manga, follows the adventures of the "Straw Hat Pirates" whose captain Monkey D. Luffy (played by IƱaki Godoy) is set on finding the fabled "One Piece" and become the King of the Pirates. This first series sees the guy recruit his crew and face a series of foes as the journey to finding the One Piece begins (again).

Now bearing in mind that Netflix will most likely have an ending in mind as they tend to keep most of their popular shows until they reach between seasons 6 and 10, I quite enjoyed this. The cast is lovable, there is a lot of heart to it, and it's good fun. I don't know if it is, as people say, faithful to the source material as I haven't yet read it or watched its anime. But it definitely perked my interest in checking it out, especially with its association to the company that also hold the rights to the Dragon Ball and Naruto franchises. 9/10
