Well, here it is. Another Marvel film that tried to tie a few other Marvel things together. In this instance, it's a few of the Disney+ shows like Ms. Marvel, Secret Invasion and more. My first impressions were that it looks like another attempt by Marvel Studios to give us a feel good film after how Thor: Love and Thunder played out with another retro look and feel to it. I personally found Captain Marvel to be a weak film, but considering it came out during a time where the MCU was in a good place, it, like other films like it, can be forgiven for not being as strong as the other films. There's also the controversy about Brie Larson being, in most people's opinions, a bit too full of herself when she is actually trying to support a good cause. But clearly isn't doing it in a way that people like. This is one of the MCU's shortest films and probably for the best given how it's been going lately so me being among the last to review it, let's review it:
Following the events of the shows and films that have led us to this film, Carol Danvers (reprised by Larson) has managed to destroy the AI known as the Supreme Intelligence which begins a civil war for the Kree whose new leader, seeks out to find resources to save their planet, at the great cost of threatening the rest of the MCU galaxy. As Carol investigates, she soon learns that when using her powers, she swaps places with two other super heroines like her. The first is Monica Rambeau (reprised by Teyonah Parris) who is the now all grown up daughter of Carol's late friend and fellow airwoman Monica (reprised via archive footage and some new scenes by Lashana Lynch). The other is Kamala Khan (reprised by Iman Vellani) who wears a band that has a connection to the Kree in some way. Together, they form a team and set out to prevent the Kree from destroying their universe while dealing with their little switcharoo problem.
This film has the makings of a feel good comedy and yet, it's only ever funny when it's Vellani doing the jokes. Sure, there are a few chuckles with Nick Fury (reprised by Samuel L. Jackson) and others, but it's never a good sign when it's only one character that makes you laugh. As for the rest of the film, it's a mess and I think the running time, may be the reason for that. Not much breathing room for any kind of development of the characters, and everyone feels like rushing everything. Yeah, this is another Marvel film that unsurprisingly is a fail and a clear indication that Marvel and Disney need to sort themselves out. Don't get me wrong, it's not the worst MCU film out there. But it is one that is making me worried about the future of this franchise, and it also makes me debate as to whether Marvel should call it a day or not. Maybe Deadpool and Wolverine will save the franchise, but we shall see. 5/10
